Grade 430 Stainless Steel Overview
Stainless steel grade 430 is a non-hardenable steel containing straight chromium, belonging to the ferritic group of steels. This steel is known for its excellent corrosion resistance, superior formability, and practical mechanical properties, making it suitable for various chemical applications.
Grade 430F stainless steel is typically provided in bar form for automatic screw machines, while Grade 434 offers similar properties with enhanced molybdenum content for improved corrosion resistance.

Performance Characteristics
Corrosion Resistance
All ferritic grades, including stainless steel grade 430, provide excellent stress corrosion cracking resistance. Grade 430 demonstrates good corrosion resistance to numerous substances, with maximum performance in well-polished or buffed conditions. Its pitting and crevice corrosion resistance is comparable to grade 304.
Heat Resistance
Stainless steel grade 430 resists oxidation up to 870°C (1598°F) in intermittent usage and up to 815°C (1499°F) in continuous usage. Proper annealing can prevent brittleness that may occur after prolonged heating in the 400-600°C range.
Heat Treatment
Solution annealing involves heating to 815-845°C followed by slow furnace cooling to 600°C and rapid air-cooling. Sub-critical annealing requires heating to 760-815°C followed by air-cooling or water quenching. This stainless steel cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.
Welding
Pre-heating at 150-200°C is required before welding. For embrittlement in welded metal, post-weld annealing at 790-815°C is recommended. Use grade 430, 308L, 309, or 310 filler rods based on application requirements.
Machining & Fabrication
Grade 430 offers easier machinability than standard austenitic steels like grade 304, though galling may occur. The low work hardening rate enables easy bending and forming, while sub-critical intermediate annealing may be required for extreme cold working operations.
Applications
  • Dish washer linings
  • Refrigerator cabinet panels
  • Element supports and fasteners
  • Stove trim rings and chimney liners
  • Automotive trim and lashing wires
