Material Description: S31254 F44 1.4547 254SMo Two-Phase Stainless Steel
254SMO stainless steel features high molybdenum, chromium, and nitrogen content, providing excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. The addition of copper enhances corrosion resistance in acidic environments. With high nickel content and elevated chromium and molybdenum levels, 254SMO offers superior stress corrosion cracking resistance.
Extensive testing confirms 254SMO maintains high crevice corrosion resistance in seawater, even at elevated temperatures. Its corrosion performance in acidic solutions and oxidizing halide environments matches that of premium nickel-based and titanium alloys. The high nitrogen content provides enhanced mechanical strength while maintaining excellent ductility, impact strength, and weldability.

Metallographic Structure
254SMO features a face-centered cubic lattice structure, typically annealed at 1150-1200°C to achieve austenitic structure. While minor metal mesophase may appear in material centers, this doesn't adversely affect impact strength or corrosion resistance. Phase precipitation at grain boundaries between 600-1000°C is manageable without significant performance degradation.
Corrosion Resistance
With very low carbon content, 254SMO minimizes carbide precipitation risk and passes Strauss Test ASTMA262 specification E. The steel resists intergranular corrosion in most environments and can be welded without intercrystalline corrosion concerns. In chloride, bromide, or iodide solutions where ordinary stainless steels suffer pitting, crevice corrosion, or stress corrosion cracking, 254SMO maintains performance.
In sulfuric acid, 254SMO significantly outperforms 316 stainless steel. While slightly less resistant than 904L at high concentrations, it excels in chloride-containing sulfuric acid. The alloy can handle diluted hydrochloric acid at normal temperatures and performs well across various concentrations and temperatures in fluorosilicic and hydrofluoric acids.
