S31254 F44 1.4547 254SMO Two-Phase Stainless Steel Overview

High molybdenum content combined with elevated chromium and nitrogen levels provide 254SMO with excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Copper additions enhance corrosion resistance in acidic environments. The high nickel, chromium, and molybdenum content ensures superior stress corrosion cracking resistance. Extensive field testing confirms 254SMO maintains exceptional crevice corrosion resistance in seawater, even at elevated temperatures.

Metallographic Structure

254SMO features a face-centered cubic lattice structure. Standard annealing at 1150-1200°C produces austenitic structure. Minor metal mesophase presence in material centers typically doesn't affect impact strength or corrosion resistance. Grain boundary precipitation may occur at 600-1000°C.

Corrosion Resistance

Very low carbon content minimizes carbide precipitation risk. Passes Strauss Test ASTMA262 specification E even after sensitization at 600-1000°C. Superior to 316 stainless steel in pure sulfuric acid. Excellent performance in chloride-containing environments with minimal pitting and crevice corrosion risk. Suitable for diluted hydrochloric acid applications at normal temperatures.
