Material Description

254SMO (S31254, F44, 1.4547) is a super austenitic stainless steel with high molybdenum, chromium, and nitrogen content, providing exceptional resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking. The addition of copper enhances corrosion resistance in acidic environments.

Metallurgical Structure

254SMO features a face-centered cubic lattice structure. Optimal austenitic structure is achieved through annealing at 1150-1200°C. The material maintains excellent impact strength and corrosion resistance despite potential minor metal mesophase presence.

Corrosion Resistance

With very low carbon content, 254SMO minimizes carbide precipitation risk. It demonstrates superior performance in chloride, bromide, and iodide environments where ordinary stainless steels suffer from pitting, crevice corrosion, or stress corrosion cracking. The alloy performs well in sulfuric acid, diluted hydrochloric acid, fluorosilicic acid, and hydrofluoric acid across various concentrations and temperatures.
