S31254 F44 1.4547 254SMO Two-Phase Stainless Steel Overview

High molybdenum content combined with elevated chromium and nitrogen levels provides 254SMO with excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Copper addition enhances corrosion resistance in certain acidic environments. The high nickel, chromium, and molybdenum content ensures good stress corrosion cracking resistance.

Extensive field testing confirms that 254SMO maintains high crevice corrosion resistance in seawater, even at elevated temperatures. Its corrosion resistance in acidic solutions and oxidizing halide environments matches that of premium nickel-based and titanium alloys. The high nitrogen content delivers superior mechanical strength compared to other austenitic stainless steels, while maintaining high ductility, impact strength, and excellent weldability.

Metallographic Structure

254SMO features a face-centered cubic lattice structure, typically annealed at 1150-1200°C to achieve austenitic structure. Minor metal mesophase presence in the material center generally doesn't affect impact strength or corrosion resistance. Grain boundary precipitation may occur at 600-1000°C.

Corrosion Resistance

Very low carbon content minimizes carbide precipitation risk. Passes Strauss Test ASTMA262 specification E even after sensitization at 600-1000°C. Superior to 316 stainless steel in pure sulfuric acid and slightly better than 904L in high concentrations. Excellent performance in chloride-containing sulfuric acid and diluted hydrochloric acid at room temperature. Suitable for wide concentration and temperature ranges in fluorosilicic and hydrofluoric acids.
