S31254 F44 1.4547 254SMo Two-Phase Stainless Steel
High molybdenum content combined with elevated chromium and nitrogen levels provide 254SMO with exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Copper additions enhance acid corrosion resistance, while high nickel content ensures excellent stress corrosion cracking resistance. Extensive field testing confirms 254SMO maintains high crevice corrosion resistance in seawater, even at elevated temperatures. The alloy demonstrates corrosion resistance comparable to premium nickel-based and titanium alloys in acidic solutions and oxidizing halide environments. High nitrogen content provides superior mechanical strength compared to conventional austenitic stainless steels, while maintaining excellent ductility, impact strength, and weldability.

Metallographic Structure: 254SMO features a face-centered cubic lattice structure, typically annealed at 1150-1200°C to achieve austenitic structure. Minor metal mesophase presence in material centers generally doesn't adversely affect impact strength or corrosion resistance.
Corrosion Performance
Very low carbon content minimizes carbide precipitation risk. The alloy passes Strauss Test ASTMA262 specification E even after sensitization at 600-1000°C. In chloride, bromide, or iodide solutions, 254SMO significantly outperforms conventional stainless steels against pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking. Superior to 316 stainless steel in pure sulfuric acid and comparable to 904L at high concentrations. Suitable for diluted hydrochloric acid applications at ambient temperatures. Performs well across wide concentration and temperature ranges in fluorosilicic and hydrofluoric acids.
