S31254 F44 1.4547 254SMo two-phase stainless steel overview: High molybdenum content combined with elevated chromium and nitrogen levels provide 254SMO with exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Copper additions enhance corrosion resistance in acidic environments. The high nickel, chromium, and molybdenum content ensures excellent stress corrosion cracking resistance.
Extensive field testing confirms 254SMO maintains high crevice corrosion resistance in seawater, even at elevated temperatures. Its corrosion performance in acidic solutions and oxidizing halide environments matches that of premium nickel-based and titanium alloys. The high nitrogen content provides superior mechanical strength compared to conventional austenitic stainless steels, while maintaining excellent ductility, impact strength, and weldability.

Metallographic structure: 254SMO features a face-centered cubic lattice structure, typically annealed at 1150-1200°C to achieve austenitic microstructure. Minor metal mesophase presence in material centers generally doesn't adversely affect impact strength or corrosion resistance.
Corrosion resistance: The ultra-low carbon content minimizes carbide precipitation risk. 254SMO passes Strauss Test ASTMA262 specification E even after sensitization at 600-1000°C. It demonstrates superior performance in chloride, bromide, and iodide environments where conventional stainless steels suffer pitting, crevice corrosion, or stress corrosion cracking.
In sulfuric acid, 254SMO significantly outperforms 316 stainless steel. While slightly less corrosion-resistant than 904L at high concentrations, it excels in chloride-containing sulfuric acids. 254SMO is suitable for diluted hydrochloric acid applications at ambient temperatures and performs well across various concentrations and temperatures in fluorosilicic and hydrofluoric acids.
