Two-Phase Stainless Steel Overview
254SMO features high molybdenum content combined with elevated chromium and nitrogen levels, providing exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Copper additions enhance acid corrosion resistance, while high nickel content ensures excellent stress corrosion cracking resistance. This alloy maintains superior crevice corrosion resistance in seawater even at elevated temperatures and offers mechanical strength exceeding conventional austenitic stainless steels due to its nitrogen content.

Metallographic Structure
254SMO features a face-centered cubic lattice structure, typically annealed at 1150-1200°C to achieve austenitic structure. While minor metal mesophase traces may appear in material centers, they generally don't impact corrosion resistance or mechanical properties.
Corrosion Resistance
With very low carbon content, 254SMO minimizes carbide precipitation risks. It demonstrates superior performance in chloride, bromide, and iodide solutions where conventional stainless steels suffer pitting, crevice corrosion, or stress corrosion cracking. The alloy performs exceptionally in sulfuric acid with chloride ions and can be used in diluted hydrochloric acid at normal temperatures.
