409 is a cost-effective ferritic stainless steel primarily used in automotive exhaust systems, earning it the common name "muffler grade."

Grade C Cr Ni Ti
409 0.03 10.5~11.7 0.50 8(C+N) min. 0.15~0.50

Automotive Applications
Automotive exhaust systems must withstand aggressive conditions including high temperatures at the manifold end, sulphuric acid condensate, and de-icing salt. Despite these severe conditions, the 11% chromium 409 grade has proven reliable for many years. Exhaust components require extensive bending, expanding, and pressing into complex shapes, making the formability of this ferritic steel particularly impressive.
