443 stainless steel is a ferritic alloy composed primarily of chromium and titanium, with extremely low carbon content. This unique composition provides exceptional corrosion resistance, particularly against moisture and salt exposure. While most ferritic alloys typically offer less durability than austenitic varieties, the high chromium content in 443 makes it at least as corrosion-resistant as 304 stainless steel.
Compared to 304 stainless, 443 exhibits lower thermal expansion, resulting in reduced stress and warping during heating processes. The material's magnetic properties, derived from its high chromium content, do not indicate inferior quality—chromium remains one of the most corrosion-resistant metals available.
As a modern ferritic stainless steel, 443 offers excellent rust resistance and good formability through optimized carbon reduction and increased chromium with titanium additions. These properties approximate those of 304 grade stainless steel, making 443 a cost-effective alternative across numerous applications.
