Introduction to 430 Stainless Steel
Stainless steel grade 430 is a non-hardenable steel containing straight chromium, belonging to the ferritic group of steels. Known for its good corrosion resistance and formability, coupled with practical mechanical properties, it can be used in various chemical applications.
Grade 430F stainless steel is typically provided in bar form for automatic screw machines, while grade 434 offers similar properties with enhanced corrosion resistance due to molybdenum content.

Grade Reasons for choosing 430
430F Higher machinability than 430 is needed in bar product, and reduced corrosion resistance is acceptable
434 Better pitting resistance is required
304 Slightly higher corrosion resistance is needed, together with greatly improved ability to be welded and cold formed
316 Much better corrosion resistance is needed, coupled with greatly improved ability to be welded and cold formed
3CR12 Lower corrosion resistance is acceptable in a cost-critical application
Performance Characteristics
Corrosion Resistance
All ferritic grades, including stainless steel grade 430, have excellent stress corrosion cracking resistance. Grade 430 demonstrates good corrosion resistance to numerous substances, with maximum performance in well-polished or buffed condition. Its pitting and crevice corrosion resistance is comparable to grade 304. Note that 430F, being a high-sulfur free machining grade, has comparatively lower resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.
Heat Resistance
Stainless steel grade 430 can resist oxidation up to 870°C (1598°F) in intermittent usage and up to 815°C (1499°F) in continuous usage. It may become brittle at room temperature after prolonged heating in the 400-600°C (752-1112°F) range, which can be mitigated through annealing.
Heat Treatment
Solution annealing involves heating to 815-845°C (1499-1553°F), slow furnace cooling to 600°C (1112°F), followed by rapid air-cooling. Sub-critical annealing requires heating to 760-815°C (1400-1499°F) followed by air-cooling or water quenching. This stainless steel cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.
Welding
Pre-heating at 150-200°C (302-392°F) is required before welding. Post-weld annealing at 790-815°C (1454-1499°F) can address embrittlement in welded areas. Recommended filler rods include grade 430, 308L, 309, or 310 based on application requirements.
Machining
Grade 430 offers better machinability than standard austenitic steels like grade 304, though galling may occur. Lightly drawn bars machine more easily than annealed bars. Grade 430F is specifically designed for easy machining applications.
Fabrication
With its low work hardening rate, grade 430 facilitates easy bending and forming. However, low ductility limits rigorous operations. The material can handle rigorous cold heading in wire form, with sub-critical intermediate annealing recommended for extreme cold working.
Applications
  • Dish washer linings
  • Refrigerator cabinet panels
  • Element supports and fasteners
  • Stove trim rings and chimney liners
  • Automotive trim and lashing wires
