254SMO (S31254 F44 1.4547) Austenitic Stainless Steel Overview
254SMO features high molybdenum content combined with elevated chromium and nitrogen levels, providing exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. The addition of copper enhances corrosion resistance in various acidic environments. With its high nickel, chromium, and molybdenum content, 254SMO demonstrates excellent stress corrosion cracking resistance.
Extensive field testing confirms that 254SMO maintains high crevice corrosion resistance in seawater, even at elevated temperatures. In acidic solutions and oxidizing halide environments common in bleaching processes, its corrosion resistance rivals that of premium nickel-based and titanium alloys. The high nitrogen content provides superior mechanical strength compared to conventional austenitic stainless steels, while maintaining excellent ductility, impact strength, and weldability.

Metallurgical Structure
254SMO features a face-centered cubic lattice structure. Standard annealing at 1150-1200°C ensures optimal austenitic formation. While minor metal mesophase may appear in material centers, these typically don't compromise impact strength or corrosion resistance. Grain boundary precipitation may occur at 600-1000°C but generally doesn't cause intergranular corrosion in most applications.
Corrosion Resistance
The ultra-low carbon content minimizes carbide precipitation risks. 254SMO passes Strauss Test ASTMA262 specification E even after sensitization at 600-1000°C. While conventional stainless steels suffer immediate localized corrosion in chloride, bromide, or iodide solutions, 254SMO maintains integrity across a wide range of conditions.
In sulfuric acid, 254SMO significantly outperforms 316 stainless steel. For hydrochloric acid applications, 254SMO is suitable for diluted solutions at ambient temperatures, though crevice conditions should be minimized. The alloy demonstrates broad applicability across fluorosilicic and hydrofluoric acid concentrations and temperatures where conventional stainless steels show limited performance.
