254SMO is a super austenitic stainless steel featuring high molybdenum, chromium, and nitrogen content, providing exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. The addition of copper enhances corrosion resistance in acidic environments. With high nickel content combined with chromium and molybdenum, 254SMO offers excellent stress corrosion cracking resistance.
The corrosion resistance of 254SMO in acidic solutions and oxidizing halide environments matches that of premium nickel-based and titanium alloys. Its high nitrogen content provides superior mechanical strength compared to conventional austenitic stainless steels, while maintaining excellent ductility, impact strength, and weldability.

254SMO features a face-centered cubic lattice structure. Standard annealing at 1150-1200°C produces austenitic structure. While minor metal mesophase may appear in material centers, this doesn't adversely affect impact strength or corrosion resistance. Grain boundary precipitation may occur at 600-1000°C.
The ultra-low carbon content minimizes carbide precipitation risk. 254SMO passes Strauss Test ASTMA262 specification E even after sensitization at 600-1000°C. While grain boundary deposits may form at these temperatures, they don't cause intergranular corrosion in most environments.
In chloride, bromide, or iodide solutions where conventional stainless steels suffer pitting, crevice corrosion, or stress corrosion cracking, 254SMO demonstrates superior performance. It offers significantly better corrosion resistance than 316 stainless steel in pure sulfuric acid and can handle diluted hydrochloric acid at room temperature.
