Processing Characteristics
Heat Treatment
Annealing: Heat to 1900-2100°F (1038-1149°C), then rapidly quench.
Cold Working
These grades work harden at a lower rate than Type 304 due to higher nickel content. Excellent ductility in annealed condition allows for roll forming, deep drawing, and bending operations.
Weldability
Austenitic stainless steels are weldable using common fusion and resistance techniques. Type 316L's extra-low carbon content eliminates harmful carbide precipitation during welding. Recommended filler materials include AWS E/ER 316L and 16-8-2.
