Basic Identification

Grade 303 is the free-machining austenitic stainless steel, equivalent to EN 1.4305 (X8CrNiS18-9) under DIN / EN 10088-3 German standard, also marked as UNS S30300, AISI 303, SUS303, BS 303S31. It is a sulfur-alloyed 18-8 Cr-Ni stainless steel designed for high-speed automatic lathe machining.

Key Features

1. Excellent Machinability: Sulfur forms manganese sulfide inclusions that break chips during turning, drilling and tapping, making it the easiest-to-machine austenitic stainless steel.

2. Moderate Corrosion Resistance: Good for mild atmospheric & weak chemical environments; lower pitting resistance than 304 due to high sulfur content.

3. Non-Hardenable by Heat Treatment: Only solution annealing at 1010–1120°C followed by rapid cooling can restore ductility and corrosion performance.

4. Good Formability & Fair Weldability: Cold forming is available, but welding is not recommended; if welded, use 308L filler and full post-weld annealing.

Typical Applications

Widely used for mass-produced precision parts: fasteners, bolts, nuts, valve components, instrument fittings, pump shafts, electrical connectors, and automotive mechanical parts requiring high-volume CNC machining.
