Services: Cutting, surface polishing, heat treatment
Brands: Walsin, BAOSTEEL, TISCO, QINGSHAN
Material Properties
Alloy 17-4 PH is a precipitation hardening martensitic stainless steel with copper and niobium additions. This grade combines high strength, hardness (up to 572°F / 300°C), and excellent corrosion resistance. Mechanical properties can be optimized through heat treatment, achieving very high yield strength up to 1100-1300 MPa (160-190 ksi).
Applications
  • Offshore applications (foils, helicopter deck platforms)
  • Food processing industry
  • Pulp and paper industry
  • Aerospace components (turbine blades)
  • Mechanical components
  • Nuclear waste casks
  • Engine components
  • Boat propeller shafts
  • Plastic molding dies
  • Valves and gears
Standards Compliance
ASTM A693 grade 630 (AMS 5604B) UNS S17400, EURONORM 1.4542 X5CrNiCuNb 16-4, AFNOR Z5 CNU 17-4PH, DIN 1.4542

Corrosion Resistance
17-4PH stainless steel offers superior corrosion resistance compared to standard hardenable stainless steels, comparable to Alloy 304 in most media. For optimal performance in chloride media, aging at 1022°F (550°C) is recommended, while 1094°F (590°C) is preferred for H2S environments.
Heat Treatment
Solution Treatment (Condition A): Heat to 1040°C for 0.5 hours, then air-cool to 30°C. Small sections may be oil quenched.

Age Hardening: Performed at low temperatures to achieve required mechanical properties. Typical conditions include H900 (482°C/1h), H925 (496°C/4h), H1025 (552°C/4h), H1075 (580°C/4h), H1100 (593°C/4h), and H1150 (621°C/4h).
Fabrication
Welding: All conventional methods can be used without pre-heating requirements.

Machining: Best performed in solution-treated condition with machining rates similar to grade 304 stainless steel.
