316L Stainless Steel Properties
Grade 316 is the standard molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel, offering superior corrosion resistance compared to Grade 304. The molybdenum content provides enhanced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. Grade 316L, the low carbon version, is immune from sensitization and is extensively used in heavy gauge welded components.

Key Characteristics
Corrosion Resistance: Excellent performance in atmospheric environments and corrosive media. Superior to 304 stainless steel. Resistant to potable water with chlorides up to 1000 mg/L at ambient temperatures.
Heat Resistance: Good oxidation resistance up to 925°C in continuous service. 316L is more resistant to carbide precipitation in the 425-860°C range.
Heat Treatment: Solution treatment (annealing) at 1010-1120°C with rapid cooling. Cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.
Welding: Excellent weldability by all standard fusion and resistance methods. 316L does not require post-weld annealing.
Machining: Tends to work harden - recommended low speeds and constant feed rates. 316L is easier to machine than 316 due to lower carbon content.
