Product Description
17-4PH Stainless Steel Overview
17-4 Precipitation Hardening (Type 630) is a chromium-copper precipitation hardening stainless steel designed for applications requiring high strength and moderate corrosion resistance. This alloy maintains high strength up to approximately 600°F (316°C).
General Properties
Alloy 17-4 PH is a precipitation hardening martensitic stainless steel with copper and niobium/columbium additions. This grade combines high strength, hardness (up to 572°F / 300°C), and excellent corrosion resistance. Mechanical properties can be optimized through heat treatment, achieving very high yield strength up to 1100-1300 MPa (160-190 ksi).
Key Applications
  • Offshore applications (foils, helicopter deck platforms)
  • Food processing industry
  • Pulp and paper industry
  • Aerospace components (turbine blades)
  • Mechanical components
  • Nuclear waste casks
Industry Standards
  • ASTM A693 grade 630 (AMS 5604B) UNS S17400
  • EURONORM 1.4542 X5CrNiCuNb 16-4
  • AFNOR Z5 CNU 17-4PH
  • DIN 1.4542
Corrosion Resistance
Alloy 17-4 PH offers superior corrosion resistance compared to standard hardenable stainless steels and is comparable to Alloy 304 in most media. For applications with potential stress corrosion cracking risks, higher aging temperatures above 1022°F (550°C) are recommended. The alloy provides excellent resistance in chemical, petroleum, paper, dairy, and food processing industries.

Processing Characteristics
Heat Treatment
Grade 630 stainless steels undergo solution treatment at 1040°C for 0.5 hours followed by air cooling. Age hardening at low temperatures achieves required mechanical properties with minimal distortion, making it ideal for long shafts and precision components.
Welding & Machining
This grade can be welded using all conventional methods without pre-heating requirements. Machining is most effective in the solution-treated condition, with machining rates comparable to grade 304 stainless steel.
Primary Applications
  • Engine components
  • High-strength boat propeller shafts
  • Plastic molding dies
  • Valves and gears
  • Aerospace components
  • Nuclear industry applications
