Grade Overview
Grade 301 stainless steel is typically supplied as strips and wires, achieving tensile strengths up to 1800 MPa across tempers ranging from 1/16 Hard to Full Hard. This grade maintains excellent ductility even in ½ hard conditions, making it suitable for aircraft components, rail car parts, and architectural structures.
Grade 301L, the low-carbon variant, offers superior ductility for applications requiring extensive forming. Grade 301LN contains higher nitrogen content, providing an enhanced work hardening rate compared to standard 301.

Performance Characteristics
Corrosion Resistance
Grade 301 offers corrosion resistance comparable to 304 stainless steel, providing excellent performance in mildly corrosive environments at ambient temperatures.
Heat Resistance
Excellent oxidation resistance for intermittent service up to 840°C and continuous service up to 900°C.
Heat Treatment
Solution treatment annealing at 1010°C to 1120°C followed by rapid cooling. Intermediate annealing uses lower temperature ranges. Not suitable for thermal hardening.
Cold Working
High work hardening rate (approximately 14MPa increase per 1% reduction in area) enables achievement of high strength through cold rolling and forming operations. Non-magnetic when annealed, becomes magnetic when cold worked.
Welding
Compatible with all standard welding methods using 308L filler metal. Annealing recommended after welding for maximum corrosion resistance. Spot welding preserves component strength.
