Material Overview
Stainless steel grade 301 is typically supplied as strips and wires with tensile strength up to 1800 MPa, available in tempers ranging from 1/16 Hard to Full Hard. This grade maintains sufficient ductility even in ½ hard conditions and is suitable for aircraft components, rail car parts, and architectural structures. Higher tempers (¾ to full hard) provide excellent wear resistance and spring characteristics.
Grade 301L, the low-carbon variant, offers superior ductility for demanding applications. Grade 301LN contains higher nitrogen content for increased work hardening rates. Grade 301 is specified in ASTM A666, while 301L follows JIS G4305 and 301LN conforms to EN10088-2 as grade 1.4318.

Material Performance
Corrosion Resistance
Grade 301 offers corrosion resistance similar to 304 stainless steel, performing well in mildly corrosive environments at ambient temperatures.
Heat Resistance
Excellent oxidation resistance for intermittent service up to 840°C and continuous service up to 900°C.
Heat Treatment
Solution treatment annealing at 1010°C to 1120°C followed by rapid cooling. Intermediate annealing uses lower temperatures. Not suitable for thermal hardening.
Cold Working
High work hardening rate (approximately 14MPa increase per 1% reduction in area) enables achievement of high strength through cold rolling and forming operations. Non-magnetic when annealed, becomes magnetic when cold worked.
Welding
Compatible with all standard welding methods using 308L filler metal. Annealing recommended after welding for maximum corrosion resistance. Spot welding suitable for cold-rolled components without compromising strength.
