Grade 301 / 301L Stainless Steel Strip Coil
Stainless steel grade 301 is typically supplied as strips and wires with tensile strength up to 1800 MPa, available in tempers ranging from 1/16 Hard to Full Hard. This grade maintains sufficient ductility even in ½ hard conditions and is ideal for aircraft components, rail car parts, and architectural structures. Higher tempers (¾ to full hard) provide excellent wear resistance and spring characteristics.
Grade 301L, the low-carbon variant, offers superior ductility, while 301LN contains higher nitrogen content for increased work hardening rates. Grade 301 is specified in ASTM A666, with 301L represented by JIS G4305 and 301LN by EN10088-2 as grade 1.4318.

Performance Characteristics
Corrosion Resistance
Grade 301 offers corrosion resistance similar to 304 stainless steel, providing good performance in mildly corrosive environments at ambient temperatures.
Heat Resistance
Excellent oxidation resistance for intermittent service up to 840°C and continuous service up to 900°C.
Heat Treatment
Solution treatment annealing at 1010°C to 1120°C followed by rapid cooling. Intermediate annealing uses lower temperature ranges. Not suitable for thermal hardening.
Cold Working
High work hardening rates (approximately 14MPa increase per 1% reduction) enable achievement of high strength through cold rolling and forming operations. Non-magnetic when annealed, becomes magnetic when cold worked.
Welding
Suitable for all standard welding methods using 308L filler metal. Annealing required after welding for maximum corrosion resistance (not necessary for 301L/301LN). Spot welding preserves component strength.
