254SMO Stainless Steel Pipe Tube UNS S31254 is a super-austenitic stainless steel designed for maximum resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. With high levels of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, this alloy is especially suited for high chloride environments including brackish water, seawater, pulp mill bleach plants, and other high chloride process streams.
254SMO pipes offer superior chloride resistance compared to Alloy 904L, Alloy 20, Alloy 825, and Alloy G. The copper content improves corrosion resistance in certain acids, while the high nickel, chromium, and molybdenum content provides excellent stress corrosion cracking performance.
| Element | Min (%) | Max (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Nickel (Ni) | 17.5 | 18.5 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 19.5 | 20.5 |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 6.0 | 6.5 |
| Copper (Cu) | 0.50 | 1.00 |
| Nitrogen (N) | 0.18 | 0.22 |
| Carbon (C) | - | 0.020 |
| Manganese (Mn) | - | 1.00 |
| Silicon (Si) | - | 0.80 |
| Phosphorus (P) | - | 0.03 |
| Sulfur (S) | - | 0.010 |
254SMO features a face-centered cubic lattice structure and is typically annealed at 1150-1200°C to obtain austenitic structure. The material maintains excellent impact strength and corrosion resistance under normal operating conditions.
