S31254 F44 1.4547 254SMo Two-Phase Stainless Steel Overview:
High molybdenum content combined with elevated chromium and nitrogen levels provides 254SMO with excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Copper addition enhances corrosion resistance in certain acids. The high nickel, chromium, and molybdenum content ensures superior stress corrosion cracking resistance.
Field tests confirm 254SMO maintains high crevice corrosion resistance in seawater, even at elevated temperatures. Its corrosion performance in acidic solutions and oxidizing halide environments matches that of premium nickel-based and titanium alloys. The high nitrogen content delivers mechanical strength exceeding other austenitic stainless steels, while maintaining excellent ductility, impact strength, and weldability.
| Element | Content (%) |
|---|---|
| C≤ | 0.02 |
| Si≤ | 0.80 |
| Mn≤ | 1.00 |
| P≤ | 0.03 |
| S≤ | 0.01 |
| Cr≥ | 19.5-20.5 |
| Ni≥ | 4.5-6.5 |
| Mo≥ | 6.0-6.5 |
| N≤ | 0.18-0.22 |
254SMO features a face-centered cubic lattice structure, typically annealed at 1150-1200°C to achieve austenitic structure. Minor metal mesophase presence in material centers generally doesn't affect impact strength or corrosion resistance. Phase precipitation may occur at grain boundaries between 600-1000°C.
The ultra-low carbon content minimizes carbide precipitation risk. 254SMO passes Strauss Test ASTMA262 specification E even after sensitization at 600-1000°C. While grain boundary deposits may form at these temperatures, they don't cause intergranular corrosion in most media, allowing welding without intercrystalline corrosion concerns.
In chloride, bromide, or iodide solutions where ordinary stainless steels suffer pitting, crevice corrosion, or stress corrosion cracking, 254SMO demonstrates superior performance. It offers significantly better corrosion resistance than 316 stainless steel in pure sulfuric acid and can be used in diluted hydrochloric acid at normal temperatures.
